Apple

Subsplash apps are currently rated 4+ in Apple's App Store.

If you have noticed that your app shows an age rating of 17+, this likely means your app is due for an update as Apple has changed their policies surrounding ratings over the last several years. Contact support to request an app update here.

Google

With each app submission, Google requires a short questionnaire to be filled out which contains questions about the app’s content. The app is then given a temporary rating based on the answers to the questions and is subsequently reviewed by a third-party rating agency to certify the rating.

Why is my app rated Teen?

You might be puzzled why your app is rated Teen in the Google Play store. With each app submission, Google requires a short questionnaire to be filled out which contains questions about the app’s content. The app is then given a temporary rating based on the answers to the questions and is subsequently reviewed by a third-party rating agency to certify the rating.

There are two contributing factors that have led us to believe it’s best to answer the questionnaire identically for most apps which results in a “T for Teen” rating, or “medium maturity” as it was called via the old rating system on Google Play.

Language

In the recent past, we had several apps identified by Google as requiring a medium maturity rating instead of a low rating because of the content. Usually, this was related to topics or language that some might consider “inflammatory/offensive” or just mature subject matter in general. Given the content they cited, even the Bible itself would qualify for the medium rating. When an app is identified by Google as possessing a rating too low for its content, it counts as a strike against your developer account. At this point, it became standard practice for us to list all apps as “medium.”

General Rating

Evaluating the content of every app would be a very time-consuming task, and since the content is dynamic, this becomes even more problematic. Defaulting to medium or “T” is an umbrella for all content that avoids strikes from Google.

On the new questionnaire, we answer only one question in the affirmative regarding possible language that some may find offensive. This alone gives the app its “T” rating. We decided this was the most accurate though the least intrusive way to give the app the “T” rating and avoid issues with Google. We’ve already had nearly all apps under our management pass the rating certification this way.
