Board filters

Use filters on a Board to see only the data that you are interested in across your tables and charts

Filters, including bulk filters and exclude filters, can be applied to Boards just as with tables and charts. These kinds of filters apply to an entire Board, making it easy to see only the data that you are interested in across the tables and charts within a Board. Board filters are accessible to all users who have view or edit permissions to the underlying data source.

Board filters override filters of the same name in a Chart pinned to a Board.

When to use a Board filter

Board filters can be very useful when you want to apply the same filters to more than one related visualization. You can narrow the focus of your Board for specific purposes or audiences.

When you apply a filter, the Board isn't automatically saved with your filter applied. This is to encourage ad hoc filtering.

Create a Board filter

You can create a filter in the Board view for any Board. This allows you to easily manipulate the visualizations and view the modified presentation in one place.

Here is an example that shows you how to add a single filter to a Board. To create a Board filter:

  1. Select the Edit button.

  2. Select Filter.

  3. Select the column you would like to filter on.

  4. Under Default values > Include, select the values to include in your Chart. The filter modal only shows 500 values. If the column you selected has more than 500 values, you must use the filter search bar to find the additional values.

  5. If you want to exclude values, click Exclude and select the values to exclude.

  6. Select Apply.

  7. Select Save.

Apply filters to specific visualizations

You can apply filters to only certain visualizations or tabs that you specify. To specify the visualizations or tabs that a Board filter should apply to, follow these steps, or refer to Selective Board filters:

  1. Select the Edit button at the upper right of the Board.

  2. In the top menu bar, select Filter.

  3. In the side panel, select the column you would like to selectively filter on.

  4. Specify values to include or exclude.

  5. Select Applicable to from the filters modal side menu. You can select or unselect entire tabs, or only choose certain visualizations. You can also search for a visualization.

  6. Select Apply.

  7. Select Save.

Mandatory filters

You may want to mark certain filters in your Board as mandatory. If you add mandatory filters to a Board, the visualizations will only load after viewers select values for those specific filters.

Mandatory filters are useful for Boards that contain data that may not be relevant for everyone who views them. They also help lower query costs since the Board does not automatically load all the data; it only loads the information after a viewer selects a filter value.

Trends AI marks mandatory filters with an asterisk in the Board filter bar:

If a Board has a mandatory filter, viewers will see a prompt to select a value for the filter:

Create mandatory filters

To create mandatory filters, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Board you would like to edit.

  2. Select the Edit button at the upper right of the Board.

  3. In the top menu bar, select Filter.

  4. In the side panel, you see a list of columns. Select the column for which you would like to create a mandatory filter.

  5. Optionally specify values to include or exclude. If you would like Board viewers to select the filter value themselves, do not select any values to include or exclude.

  6. Select Filter options from the side menu.

  7. Select the Require users to select a filter value checkbox.

  8. Select Apply.

Edit a filter

Your applied filters appear in a row at the top of the Board, where you can select them to open the filter window. Then, you can edit the values to include or exclude. If you open the filter modal from View mode, you can only edit the values to include or exclude.

If you open the filter from Edit mode by selecting the Edit button at the upper right of the Board and clicking on the filter, you can edit the values to include or exclude, specify the visualizations the filter should apply to, and configure linked filters.

Change the filter order

If your Board has multiple filters, you can arrange them in the filter bar so that they are in a logical, coherent order. This makes it easier for viewers of the Board to understand and use the filters on the Board. Changing the filter order has no effect on the filter precedence.

To change the order of filters in the filter bar, follow these steps:

  1. Select the Edit button at the upper right of the Board you would like to edit.

  2. Move any filter by clicking, dragging, and dropping it to a new location within your filter bar.

  3. Select Save in the upper right of the Board.

Delete a filter

To delete a filter, you must be in Edit mode.

  1. Select the Edit button in the top right of the board.

  2. Hover over the filter, and select the X that appears.

  3. Select Save in the upper right of the board.
