Creating logo variations

Two logo variations are required for Subsplash, a simple logo for use on the Mobile app and smaller devices and a logo with your organization/app name included in the graphic for use on TV apps.

Providing the two simplest versions of your logo provides the flexibility necessary to size your branding according to the context in which it will be displayed while still maintaining brand integrity.

To create a simplified version of your logo, identify the most unique or recognizable aspect of your logo and then remove the text or elements around it. If your logo is just text, try using the first letter as your mark.



Branding layers

The most important aspect of providing your branding accurately is understanding the concept of layered artwork. The primary reason that we ask for your artwork in layers, as opposed to a flattened image, is that it makes the positioning of brand elements very flexible.

This flexibility is necessary for the countless devices, screen sizes, and platforms on which your artwork will be displayed. The background can be cropped as necessary for portrait/landscape, as well as for differing aspect ratios, while the logo can remain centered and sized appropriately for each device, app icon, or other use areas.

Logo layers

Your logo layers must include transparency. This is because your background layer will need to show through underneath. Simply place your logo on a 1024x1024 px canvas (you can use software such as Photoshop to do this), and then save your logo as a PNG.

Do fill the available space with your logo.

Don’t leave extra space in the logo layer.

Background Layers

Unlike the logo layers, background layers must not include any transparency. In terms of content, simple is better than complex. We recommend using a solid color, gradient, or simple pattern on a 3840x3840 px canvas as your background. Do not include your logo, text, or visually distracting imagery on this layer. Remember, it will be used in your app icon and launch image, with any size in between, so it will need to be able to scale appropriately.

Tips

Do keep your backgrounds opaque.

Don’t have transparency in your background.

Do keep your corners square.

Don’t round corners. This will be applied later.

Do use solid colors, gradients, patterns, and simple photos.

Don’t use your logo, text, screenshots, or busy photos.

FAQ

What is transparency?

Transparency in an image is where one color is set to be, essentially, invisible, and allows anything behind it to show through. In the case of branding, if parts of the logo are transparent, the background image or color will be visible.

Transparency can be applied to most image or graphic file formats, such as PNG. Many image editing programs, Adobe Photoshop, for example - will allow you to apply transparency to pieces of your logo image.

What are the required image sizes?

For each set of images (app icon, launch image, and global assets), you’ll submit a logo and a background image or color. The logo should always be 1024x1024 pixels, and the background image should always be 3840x3840 pixels.

Can I put my logo on the background image and leave the logo section blank?

No, all the sections need to be filled out. Our system requires separate layers to comply with iOS multitasking requirements. It also gives your branding the flexibility to be applied to many different devices and screen sizes while retaining its integrity.

Do I have to fill out all the sections?

Yes! But as long as the images meet all the requirements, you can upload one logo, one background, and choose one brand color, and use the same image in multiple sections.

Can I resize my logo? Can my logo fill the icon? Can I make my logo bigger?

Currently, our system does not support resizing the logo. As long as the logo is stretching to the edges of the 1024x1024 space, it will be as big as our system allows. If your logo looks small, it might be because it isn’t filling the entire 1024x1024 space. The simpler your logo is, the larger it will appear to be.

Why is the “Submit Branding” button grayed out?

Most likely, this is because all the sections haven’t been completed yet. If a logo, background, and/or color has been selected in all sections and it still won’t let you save, let us know!
