Custom feeds for Subsplash apps

Use server-hosted JSON to create custom content and navigation for Subsplash mobile and TV apps.

Written by Cody Walton

Custom feeds let your organization supply its own content and code for screens in Subsplash mobile and TV apps. Your server returns JSON that the app interprets and displays.

Mobile custom feeds

Mobile apps support two custom feed formats:

  • Block Page is the current, recommended format for new work. It uses theme-aware text, image, button, frame, and other blocks that you can update without an app release. Block Page requires mobile app version 5.4.0 or later.

  • Legacy Objects support older app versions and specific handlers such as list and mediaDetail.

Handlers tell the app how to display each screen. Actions can connect screens, open media, launch app features, or retrieve another feed. You can also use deep links to open supported custom feed content.

TV custom feeds

Custom feeds can power Subsplash TV apps for Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, and Google TV. TV apps use Legacy Objects and support list and mediaDetail views. Block Page is not supported on TV.

Hosting and limitations

You host the JSON, images, audio, and video on your own infrastructure. Externally hosted custom feed content has these limitations:

  • Subsplash Media Search does not index it.

  • Subsplash does not create share pages for events or media supplied through a custom feed.

  • Subsplash embeds are not available for custom feed content.

For most organizations, use Subsplash for primary content and the REST API for synchronization. Add custom feeds for the screens and experiences that need custom behavior.
