ProPresenter is a fantastic tool to control your video sources, lower thirds, images, videos, etc., and with the release of ProPresenter 7.1 comes the introduction of a Capture option for screen recording and streaming which is capable of streaming directly to Subsplash Live; however, currently ProPresenter only offers pre-configured encoding profiles, not individual control over each streaming and encoding setting, and the profiles they offer do not mesh well with the encoding settings we support.

Due to this, we do not recommend using ProPresenter as an encoder in its current state. That being said, it does work for some users, so keep reading to learn how to set up ProPresenter to stream directly to Subsplash Live. Additionally, at the end of the article you will find an alternative approach that works much better for the majority of our clients!

RTMP Streaming from ProPresenter

The full instructions for setting up an RTMP stream output within ProPresenter are maintained by Renewed Vision here. Within that article is a list of all the available streaming settings. Some of those settings need to be configured in a certain way in order to stream to Subsplash Live, so use the supplementary list below to confirm that your settings are as optimized for Subsplash Live as possible!

  • Destination: This is where you will switch from recording to streaming mode. Select RTMP from the drop-down menu.

  • Address: This is where you will enter your server URL for Subsplash Live, which can be found in your Subsplash Dashboard under Media > Live > Settings.

  • Key: This is where you will enter your stream key for Subsplash Live, which can be found in your Subsplash Dashboard under Media > Live > Settings.

  • Encoding: This is where you will set the resolution and frame rate of your video stream. A number of options are available here, but if you take a look at our encoding recommendations for Subsplash Live you will notice that none of the available options actually match our recommendations perfectly. While still imperfect, the most reliable option is 720p30 (2.5 Mbps).

We are hopeful that the reliability of RTMP streams from ProPresenter to Subsplash Live will improve with time! If you hope the same, we encourage you to reach out to Renewed Vision directly and submit a feature request to them here. Let them know that we would be happy to work with them on this!

Streaming to Subsplash Live with ProPresenter + OBS

If you don’t want to risk the performance issues which are often experienced when streaming directly from ProPresenter to Subsplash Live, an alternative approach is to combine ProPresenter with OBS, allowing ProPresenter to handle all your graphics and OBS to handle the actual encoding of the stream. If you are not familiar with OBS, you can read more about why we recommend it here.

Connecting ProPresenter to OBS will rely on a third-party technology from NewTek known as NDI. NDI essentially allows the creation of virtual cables connecting one point to another. With an NDI connection, you can connect a ProPresenter output from one computer to OBS on either the same or a different computer. Running both ProPresenter and OBS on the same computer does put more strain on that computer, but most machines are still able to handle running both well so it’s worth a try before attempting to set up a second computer.

There are numerous resources available for establishing this connection, but we recommend you start with the resources available directly from Renewed Vision, which consist of:

With these resources, you should be able to get your ProPresenter output connected to OBS via NDI. As a final step, you would need to configure OBS to stream to Subsplash Live by following our OBS setup guide.
